I’ll let you in on a secret! I’ve actually got two names – the extremely royal, very British title “Bertie” (taken from the nickname of King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II’s father) and its total opposite, the very Filipino but endearing “Taba” which means plump or hefty! I honestly get confused with these two monickers at times, but I always respond with my ever ready smiles and kisses nonetheless!
I most certainly got lucky in more ways than one! I was born into the family of Mommy Almalou, the most caring of kennel (dog breeder) owners in Nasugbu, Batangas. My siblings and I got seriously sick early on, and through her and the vets’ attentive concern, plus our indomitable fighting spirit, we were all able to pull through!

My mall friends Jenna and Jane fell in love with me on my first visit to their store! Click above to play!
Pups like us are ready for release as early as 8 weeks of age and I witnessed my siblings find their owners one by one. Left alone and at almost four months of age, I thought I was a hopeless case! Then one evening, I overheard Mommy Almalou on her mobile phone excitedly entertaining an inquiry about me! A couple of days passed and I laid my eyes on my prospective owners for the very first time! Wasn’t really that turned on as there wasn’t a little boy nor girl in tow. Was looking forward to spending my life with a play mate, you see. Half an hour passed and after checking each and every nook and cranny of my whole being, and the haggling about how much I was worth, I had finally found my forever parents!
The drive to my new home in cool Tagaytay City was filled with mixed emotions and quite memorable! It was only in the car that I had a good sizing up of my parents. They seemed really nice but due to my uncontrollable excitement, I wet myself and I reckoned they’d return me to Nasugbu! To my utter surprise, they kissed me, gently patted me, and assured me everything would be okay. It was then I knew I hit the jackpot!
I was warmly welcomed by my Kuya Dido and my new siblings – a macho 12 year old American Bulldog named Dickie, the queen of the house meek and proper Pug called Wallis, and a gentle giant, all hair, and still awkward 8 month old Wooly Siberian Husky titled George. This happened not in my new home but outside its gates. After some time, I finally figured it had to do with dog hierarchy because we did exactly the same thing when Harry the white Husky, my youngest brother, arrived last January.
I’m one year old today and time truly flies when one’s having fun! I hardly take naps during the day because I’m preoccupied following each and every member of the household around each and every corner of our home. It’s music to my ears when I hear my parents shout “Bertie” or “Taba” in exasperation, perhaps due to my endearing misdeeds! Mornings are spent attempting to wake my house mates up with kisses, gorging on yummy Vitality Lamb and Rice puppy food, walking around the neighbourhood with my siblings, jostling for chew toys and treats with George (my beloved best buddy) and Harry in the garden. Afternoons are rather boring because everyone’s asleep enjoying their siesta and I’m left looking up the ceiling while waiting for the the day’s last meal. Late afternoons mean visiting and running around the expansive grounds of our kind, portly neighbour. Afterwhich is winding down hour but I don’t hit the sack till I get to irritate George by 8pm! Lest we forget, trips to the nearby malls, Ayala Serin and Robinson’s, plus Mahogany Market and the vet’s (the uber affectionate and fantastic team of Dra Marianne, Jeff, and Neng of Roche Pet Care) are twice a week and I so look forward to them! I don’t really care much for long drives to the big city as the heat kills me!
I must’ve done something right in my past life! Join me in thanking the high heavens for a life most wonderful! Indeed, a most happy birthday to me! Here’s to a zillion more years of barkdays! 🙂
I just looooove running after my big bro George! Click below to find out who beats who in marathons!
According to Wikipedia, below are my breed’s characteristics (Kindly take note that I don’t nap and am not one to laze around!):
The breed is often described as multum in parvo, or “much in little”, alluding to the Pug’s remarkable personality, despite its small size. Pugs are strong willed but rarely aggressive, and are suitable for families with children. The majority of the breed is very fond of children and sturdy enough to properly play with them. Depending on their owner’s mood, they can be quiet and docile but also vivacious and teasing. Pugs tend to be intuitive and sensitive to the moods of their owners and are usually eager to please them. Pugs tend to have a somewhat lazy nature and spend a lot of time napping. They are often called “shadows” because they follow their owners around and like to stay close to the action, craving attention and affection from their owners.
